Data Scientist (ML & Credit Scoring)

Role Overview: Safaricom is looking for a Data Scientist to join the M-Pesa data team. You will be at the forefront of building machine learning models for real-time fraud detection and alternative credit scoring for millions of users. This role offers the unique opportunity to work with one of the largest datasets in Africa. Responsibilities: - Build, deploy, and maintain machine learning models using Python and TensorFlow. - Develop credit scoring algorithms for M-Shwari and other lending products. - Perform deep-dive analysis on consumer behavior to drive product innovation. - Build real-time fraud detection systems using streaming data. - Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into production environments. - Communicate insights and model performance to key stakeholders. Requirements: - 4+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a similar analytical role. - Advanced proficiency in Python and libraries like Pandas, Scikit-learn, and XGBoost. - Strong SQL skills and experience working with large-scale data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery). - Solid understanding of statistical modeling and machine learning principles. Nice-to-haves: - Experience with Apache Spark or Flink for large-scale data processing. - Masters or PhD in a quantitative field (Statistics, Math, CS). - Previous experience in fintech or consumer finance.
